Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves

These are the caves for the Jain Monks for residential purpose, built in the city of Bhuvneshwara, Orissa. These have a historical, Archeological and religious importance. Based on the inscriptions of Hathigumpa in total 117 caves were excavated by Kharavela and others on the Kumari Hill.


Flashback
The caves are built on two hills known as Kumari Parvat, facing each other across the road in between the two. It was the King Kharavela during whose reign these were built as residential complexes for the Jain ( a caste) monks. Udayagiri meaning the Sunrise Hill has 18 caves in all whereas Khandagiri has 15 caves.

The Caves

The most important of all the caves is the Ranigumpha in Udayagiri - a double storeyed monastry. The caves are ornately carved with scriptures on it. Out of these Rani Ki Naur is a beautifully carved cave with sculptural friezes.

There are Hathigumpha (Elephant cave ) and Bramhi inscriptions on the caves. These inscriptions comprise of seventeen lines have been carved in deep cut Brahmi Language of the 1st Century BC. These lines describe out the relics of the then King uptill 12 years of his reign.
