Jispa – Live in No Mans Land

By Mukti Sharma

The skies are blue with the colors of red and black dancing to the tune of the winds. Though the winds are not that much fast still, they dip in the colors of the nature. Green and yellow seems to be missing in the skies, but the grounds seem to fill the two colors. As you look around the rusty brown and salty white and grey add to the beauty.

Its different being here in Jispa – not something you find in Hill Stations like Kashmir and Manali. Though there are some similarities you can find in the paths of Himalayas and Jispa, still the difference is awe-sticken. There is no second opinion – waking up to the sounds of heard of horses, watching the lush greenery and stark barren in one go – something so rare – you won't find anywhere else.
If you love the heights and if you intend to stay in a barren land with minimum of life – be it man or animal, this is one place you should be heading to. Sleeping in a canopy or a sort of solitary hotel is one of the things most of the people love to do here. If you want to join in this group then its the time to hop in.

Jispa – a tiny town in Himachal Pradesh is 20 kms from Keylong, this place is quite close to Bara – Lacha – La Pass ( 12000 ft) - the highest motorable road in the World. Most of the travelers have described it as a place which seems primitive and out of the world. Beautiful as it is, this place has the charms of a different land. Sounds of the bells and the steps of the sheeps on the stones and the shadow of the moon on the river, its one of the best places in the world.

If you are not much concerned about food, then this is the perfect place. For those whom food plays an important part, most of the cuisines are Chinese – all varities of them – both vegetarian and non – vegetarian. Soups are an integral part of Jispa Food.

But thats not all – for those who like angling and mountaineering there are enough arrangements in the hotels of Jispa. There are rest houses and mountaineering huts for the mountaineers to stay in. If you like the river background then right next to the river, there is huge camping ground where you can spend you day and night ease. Enough arrangements for a semi – comfortable stay are there ( some may find the atmosphere a bit difficult – don't expect a homely cosiness in this camp).

And if you are lucky enough you might see the rare wildlife of Jispa – Horse like Skyang and Ibex. Watch out, they might be walking just behind you.

To reach Jispa there are two better ways – Either from Rohtang Pass or from Manali – whichever you like easiest. The distances are to be covered by road. For those with a Breathing Problem or a Heart Problem – even minor ones, consultation with a Doctor is recommended.

Either avoid being here in the months of winters – November to January End. Most of the roads are either closed or get closed due to heavy snowfall. If you enter Jispa in these months, its just impossible to come out before February.
