Kerala Village Fair
Kerala Fair
On the beach of Kovalam, every year for 10 days there come the sound of
pomp and show. Thousands of people gather here, at the beach to make
merriment and to dance to the tunes of Music. All this happens in the Kerala
Village Fair. This fair is also known as the Grammam - the Kerala Village
Fair. The idea behind this fair is to bring out the Typical Kerala Village
into light so that people do not forget their ages old tradition.
Kerala Village Air Fair is held for 10 days in the month of January. It is
usually organised at Kovalam Beach and Marine Drive of Ernakulam in Kerala.
Its a showcase of the typical Keralite customs and traditions.
About Kerala Village Fair
The whole of the Keralian Village is created in the Village Fair. thatched
Houses called the Nalukettu Houses. The traditional upper class houses
called the Tharavadu - Quadrangular Mansions made of wood and tiles having
open courtyards, corridors, massive pillars and dormer windows are made
showcasing the typical Keralite Village Mansion. Inside these mansions and
cottages are the jewels of Kerala. Priceless teakwood furniture, sandwood
showpieces, jewelry boxes, spice bowls, ethnic jewelry, exquisite paintings,
musical instruments, four poster beds, palmyra fans, swords, shields all are
on a display in these Village Houses. Outside the house there are the
colorful Pookalam called the floral decoration of the courtyard is done.
Thousands of flower petal leaves are used to make these patterns full of
colors.
Even the Tea Stalls in the typical Keralite forms are made here.
Meenakshi Temple
Located in Thiruvananthpuram, the
Meenakshi Temple is closest to the Village Air Fair Location. This
World renowned Temple, made thousands of years ago is a must see.

Village:
The Village Air represent the typical Keralite Village. Houses and huts
depicting the higher and lower class of Kerala are made. In the evening
there are programs presenting the Kerala Culture. Astrologer,
artistians, chayakkada ( tea stalls), sorcerers - all of them remind of
the bygone era.
In the evening, almost all kinds of dance are held. These dances
include the South Indian Classical Dances like Kathakali, Kuchupudi,
Mohiniattam are included. Some of the folk dances like the Opanna are
also organised. Kerala is also famous for its Martial Arts forms. These
including the Kalaripayattu, Theyyam, Pulikali, Villupattu, Pavakkoothu,
Kakkarisi Natakam, Panchavadyam, Thullal and Bhajans etc. are performed
in the Village Air Fair.
But there is one more thing which adds spice to this Village Fair. The
typical South Indian Food - a vast feast including the delicacies of the
South are plattered. Some of the famous dishes like meen moilee, mutton
biryani, theeyal, malabar porotta, lacy idiappam, appam, chemmeem
coconut fry, chamundi dish, mixed vegetable avial and fish stew with
coconut milk make a part of this Village Air Feast.Vellapam, Idiappam,
Kallapam, Vattayappan are the main course delicacies.
