Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj - Come celeberate the bond of love between a brother and a sister.

Bhai Dooj is a joyous Indian Festival that celebrates the affectionate relationship between a brother and his sister. On this day loving sisters apply the sacred tilak on brother's forehead and pray for their long life. Brother in their turn promise to protect the sister from all adversities in life. Date of Bhai Dooj is decided according to the position of the moon as the festival is to be celebrated on the 'Dooj' day in the Hindu month of Kartik which is the month of October - November according to Gregorian Calendar. 'Dooj' in Hindi means next day after the new moon night. Bhai Dooj also marks the culmination of Diwali celebrations as it is celebrated on the fifth or the last day of the Festival of Lights.

Bhaidooj is celebrated all over India though regional variations can be seen in the name of the festival and also its method of celebration. The festival of Bhai Dooj is also known as Bhai Tika, Bhai Phota, Bhaubeej, Yamadwitheya, Bhathru Dwithiya and Bhatri Ditya.

Bhai DoojLegends of Bhai Dooj :
Most popular legend of Bhai Dooj narrates the story related to Yamaraj - the Hindu mythological God of Death and sister Yamuna. It is said that once on the auspicious day of Dooj Yamaraj visited his twin sister after a long period of time. Yamuna treated his brother very affectionately. She applied tilak on her brother's forehead and treated him with a sumptuous meal. Lord Yama was so pleased that he declared that who so ever is greeted with tilak and a meal on the Dooj day will never be hurled to hell.

Another popular legend related to the festival says that after slaying the demon Narakasur Lord Krishna visited his sister Subhadra who received him very warmly. Subhadra applied tilak on Krishna's forehead and showered flowers on him. Since then the custom of applying tilak became extremely popular.
