Makar Sankranti

The only Hindu Festival which is according to the Solar Calender and not by the Lunar Calender. It is celebrated not only in India but also Nepal. It marks the shifting of the Sun in the Northern Hemisphere. In other words shifting of the Sun from Sagittarius to the Capricorn Zodiac Sign. It also marks the coming of the new Season.

Sankranti Ladoos
These mouthewatering ladoos - sweets are prepared on the fall of sankranti. High in fat with lot of ghee - clarified butter and nuts, it is auspicious and helathy to have one on the day.

Antics of Sadhus
On this day Naga Sadhus show a number of antics like floating on water, singing, doing acrobatics and telling the future. It one place for the Sadhus to show their talents and also their supernatural powers.

The Fair

With the first sunlight people flong at the Ghats of holy river throughout India. This Puja is commenced by a dip in the river. Closing their eyes and by chanting Mantras (religious hymns) they bow down in front of the Lord Sun seeking his blessings. Prayers are held and food in the form of Prasada is distributed. Laddu of Jaggery and cashew nuts are prepared as the main food of the day. On this day some people even distribute food and clothes, give out donations to schools; in a way do a number of things to help the less privileged.
