Naag Panchami

It is believed that the world is balanced on Shesh Naags Head (Lord Vishnu - the Hindu God reclines on him) - it is this mythology and other such stories which has given birth to the festival called Naag Panchami. It is a festival wherein the snake is worshiped as the mentor of Lord Shiva and other Hindu Gods.
Snakes have a lot of Significance in Hindu mythology as they have been playing major role in protecting people from the warth of demons (Krisnalila - Plays of Lord Krishna as a Child).

Highlights

Celebrated by
: Hindus
Major Places : Southern India, Maharashtra, Bengal and Rajasthan.
Month of Celebration : July/August

Observances : Fast by men and women both, Offering of Milk to the snake lord. Sweets are distributed on this day.

Facets of Naag Panchami :
Naag Pokhri
Naag Pokhri - Snake Dwell
Its one place which is decorated with everything. Naag pokhri or snakes second home is decorated to make the Snake God happy. Lights and decoration are the main criteria here.

Milk Bath
The Bath
The Snake God is bathed with milk on Naag panchami. It is supposed to be very auspicious if the naag or the snake, even if it is tamed one drinks the milk offered to him after the bath.

Seven Hooded Snake
The Festival

The first sunlight marks the day of Naagpanchami. There is a long queue in front of Snake Temple and Lord Siva Temple. People come with the prasada which is a composition of milk, fruits and flowers. First of all the flowers are kept on the forehead of the idol of the Lord Snake and then fruits are touched to his feet as presents. Then the milk is poured into a large silver vessel for the snake lord to drink. It is supposed to be very auspicious if the snake drinks milk from that vessel. It is thought to bring prosperity.

Now there are people who put milk in front of the snake hole and wait there to see if the milk has been drunk by the Snake Lord; people who go to the snake charmers to pray the Snake, take snakes in their hands to get the blessings. It makes for a exciting festival if one sees it.

*Kaalsarp Yoga : According to the horoscope people having Kaalsarp yoga are supposed to see setbacks in life, ill health, problems in education and jobs. On this day a special ritual is carried out to remove this from the affected person life.
