Sir Edwin Lutyens was the architect of Mughal Gardens, who made this Garden for Lady Harding. Mughal Gardens are the unique gardens in the sense that these are a combination of Mughal and British Architecture. There are Mughal canals, European Flowerbeds, lawns and privet hedges, shurbs, herbs, plants and trees all around the garden. It has four water ways with different fountains.

The Mughal Gardens are situated in the Rashtrapati Bhavan - the Presidents House of India. These are open for a few days in the months of February to March. Rest of the year these are close for the common public.

The Garden
Sprawling over 6 acres of land, the Mughal Gardens have three parts - the Rectangular Garden, the Long Garden and the Circular Garden. It has a variety of trees, herbs and Shurbs. It has the largest collection of Mari Gold Flowers with 13 varieties of them. It has 250 varities of roses, 60 kinds of Bougainvillea and dwarf Oranges. The flowers in the Mughal Gardens of Rashtrapati Bhavan can be found in various colors like pink, mauve, golden rust, red, white, yellow and even red.

The Garden is divided into :

»Main Garden : In the Main Garden there are two channels running North to South and two channels running East to West thus covering all the four directions. Six Lotus shaped fountains add beauty to the channels. The reflection of the Presidents House can be seen these four channels. Just next to the four channels are the lovely lawns with Doob Grass brought from Calcutta. Moulsri, Putranjiva Roxburgi, Cypress, Thuja Orientalis and China Orange trees add sparkle to the Lawns of Mughal Gardens. Criss Cross pavements pave the way of the visitors.

» Terrace Garden: Two gardens one higher than the other on the either side of the Main Gate, is called the Terrace Garden. At the centre is a beautiful fountain, which falls inwards forming a well. The flowers planted here are the same as planted in the Main Gate.

» Purda Garden : Also known as Long garden, it has 12 ft high walls. It is basically a rose garden. There are also rose creepers, Rhyncospermum, Tecoma Grandiflora, Bignonia Vanista, Adenoclyma, Echitice, Parana Paniculata. And along with the walls are planted China Orange Trees. It has 16 square rose beds which are surrounded by low height hedges.

»Circular or Butterfly Garden : The another name given to this Garden is the Sunken Garden. It is in the form a terraced bowl which is surrounded by flowers like Stock, Verbena, Mignonette, with tall Dahlias which give out fragrance all the time. Around this garden are the offices of horticulturists, a green house and a nursery..

»India Gate : Its the Homage given to all those soldiers who fought during the World War II. Names of all those brave soldiers have been inscribed on this Gate.

» The Red Fort : Sahjahan built this massive fort when he shifted his Capital from Agra to New Delhi. Indias First Prime Minister Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru hoisted Independent Indias First Flag here. Its a must see tourist destination.

» Shakti Peeth : The resting place of Indias Iron Lady and Prime Minister, its the place where Indira Gandhi was laid down.

»Qutub Minar : Qutab-ud-Din Aibak, built this Minar giving honour to the Islamic Principles of Acuurate design and construction. It also has a Iron pillar which is there for 1600 years without rusting or wroughting.
