Situated within the confines of the
Western Ghats in the southern Indian state of
Kerala, Periyar
National Park and Tiger Reserve is one of the most captivating wildlife
parks in the world. Periyar sanctuary also called the Tekkadi wildlife
sanctuary, this place is ideal for watching the animals in their natural
habitat. The secinc beauty and diversity of wildlife attracts a large number
of nature lovers every year. Spread over 777 sq.km the sanctuary is famous
for the large elephant population which are an absolute delight to watch
specially when you travel by boat on the lake.
A Walk In The Wild:
Periyar is the ideal place for the elephant lovers who can see this mammal
swinging its trunks, in its natural habitat.
Herds of playful wild elephants have made this place their blissful abode.
Periyar is one of the world's famous wildlife reserves where one can lay
their eyes on the other creatures as well. The vast area of the park
encompasses a lot of other animals such as leopard, wild dog, barking deer,
mouse deer, Nilgiri langur (a primate), bonnet macaque, sambhar, porcupines,
squirrels, gaur (Indian bison), wild boar and sloth bear.

Tips:
Guided jungle walks are available and depart early in the morning. For
walks further into the park guides can be arranged from the wildlife
information center. Trekking can also be done inside the park.
Elephant-back rides are available for wildlife viewing around the park.
There are spice gardens nearby and tours are regularly organized.
Climate:
The temperature during summers (April-June) ranges from 21°C to 24°C.
During the monsoon (July-August), it ranges from 19°C to 21°C.
Winter season lasts from October to March and is cool and pleasant. The
best period to visit the place would be November-April.
