Tripura Castle

It is situated in Agartala, the capital of Tripura state. It can be easily reached from Tripura by cab or a tourist bus. Agartala on the other hand can be reached from Gwahati, Calcutta and New Delhi via air.

Location:
The Magnificent Castle is situated in Agartala.

Fast Facts
Flashback

The King Radha Kishore Manikya was the architect of this palace who thought of making this Fort. It costed 1millon rupees to make this magnificent Palace. After the older palace (10kms away from the newr one) was destroyed by an earthquake in 1897, this one was built to replace the old one.

In 1949, the kingdom of Tripura was merged in the Indian legislative and so was the palace. The Neoclassical Palace was designed by Sir Alexander Martin of Messrs Martin & Co.

Malancha Niwas
Malancha Niwas
Its near the Kunjaban Palace - this is the bunglow where Rabindra Nath Tagore stayed in the year 1919. Earlier it was not a well built place but then it has been converted into a nice one. Its in Agartala itself.

Pilak
Pilak
These are the treasure houses of Hindu and Bhuddist Sculpture. Dating back to 8th and 9th centuries, images, terracotta plaques and sealing are found here. Its around 100kms from Agarthala. One can find respite among the nature and stay here for a day or two. Pilak Pantha Niwas (residence) is one of the places where one can stay.

Tripura PalaceEpitome Of Magnificence:

It covers an area of approximately one square km. The beautiful walls of the palace encase public halls such as the Throne Room, the Durbar Hall (Courtroom), Library and the reception.

Then there is the Chinese Room which was made by Chinese artists who were called from China especially for this work. Then there are fountains around the palace with the grand one at the entrance of the Palace.

Its a two storied Palace with three large domes which rests atop a four storied central tower. There are the Gardens in the palace on the lines of Mughal Gardens with fountains and two artificial ponds on the either side.

In And Around

The Musical Fountain : Though its a new addition, its a charm among the attractions of the castle. Watch the fountain dance in tune with the music!

Unakoti : Though its quite far far away from Agartala (About 178 kms), this Shaiba Pilgrimage (Shrine)is worth visiting for the ones interested in visiting pilgrims. Unakothi means one less than a crore, and it has those 7th-8th century rock cut carvings with primitive waterfalls. This place gets its name from the mythology that when Lord Shiva (God of Destruction) was going to Kashi (another pilgrimage) with one crore Gods and Godesses he made a night halt here. Next morning, no one other than Shiva himself could get up, so the God set affoot alone cursing the others to become stone. And hence the name and hence the one less than crore carvings!

Not to be Missed

Kharchi Puja : It is celebrated in the month of July in Agartala. Its a week long celebration with puja of earth. Sacrifice of goats and pegions is a usual practice in this festival.

Durga Puja : It is one of the major festivals of Tripura. Held with Grandeur and valour in the winter season it holds puja for the Goddess Durga - Goddess of power. Its a must see for those who are here in this festive season. Its a four day puja which is usually held in the month of September/October.

Our Suggestions
  • It can be quite cold in the winters with the temperature going upto 1Deg C. So keep really warm woolens in the winters. Its better to visit in the months of February / March if you are prone to cold winds.
  • Joints and eateries are not in large numbers and it is preferable to have food in the resturants (where you are staying) only.
  • Being a Hill Station, its a beautiful place to live in for a few weeks. Its good to extend your hoildays if you like it.
  • Food here is Chinese, Indian Vegetarain Non - Vegetarian and ethnic Tripra delicacies to choose from.
  • Pre book your hotel room to avoid inconvinence of any sorts. To make things easier for you, we can book on your behalf, if you wish so. Contact us for the same.
